AMD ATI RADEON HD 4890 Vs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 – Who Is The Winner?

As we know AMD ATi is one of the product with high ability for overclocking & reasonable price compare to their competitor nVIDIA. Whereas nVIDIA is good on their last perform technology & higher compatibility.
But with the very brave of penetration from AMD ATI in technology & their reasonable price slowly nVIDIA will follow the trace of AMD ATI by reducing the price for some of their product but “not” reducing the quality.

Now user’s favourite topic is AMD AT Radeon HD 4890 newest product launch by AMD ATI surely to compete the rival nVIDIA GeForce GTX 275. Both of them labeled in around $250.

Radeon HD 4890 vs nVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 Fitures

Radeon HD 4890 using base chipset engine RV790 the code is shown on the chipset. Still using the same achitechture as RV770 GPU in Radeon HD 4850 & 4870. Same manufacturing 55 nm process. But claimed by AMD that RV790 is brand new chipset eventhough they are “family” to RV770.

On RV790 the clock raised significally & effected to the performa. Some capasitor also added by AMD engineer & make chip RV790 tolerable to higher voltage. In other words more tolerable for you to do overclocking.

Standard clock for Radeon HD 4890 is set to 850MHz where additional headroom is prepared for vendors to raise the clock higher than the standard & surely for overclocker. GDDR5 with clock speed 975 MHz is use for RAM type standard by AMD. Eventhough we can’t see many difference to Radeon HD 4870 with clock speed 900 MHz but GDDR5 is ableto transfer data four times per clock & has 1 GB RAM onboard two times much from other 4870.

Radeon HD 4890 is also need higher power supply. For peak power it takes 190 Watt & for idle it takes better than 4870.
Will nVIDIA stay cool with the step taken by AMD of course not. nVIDIA also prepared their product to compete HD 4890. For now nVIDIA has the highest graphic card single called GeForce GTX 285 with price & ability far above Radeon HD 4890. Matched rival for AMD for now is GeForce GTX 275. Base engine GPU use for GTX 275 is still the same as the younger brother GT200 using 55 nm manufacturing process & 240 stream processor.

But one technology is changed on GTX 275 nVIDIA engineer has nonactivated one chipset ROP partition which caused the decrease of fill rate to 28 pixel per clocks where normal is 32 pixel per clocks. This will impact to antialiasing throughput which automatically down. With that changes other matters in technique specification GTX 275 will also change. GPU RAM was 512 bits in GT200 down to 448 bits. Total RAM was 1 GB down to 896 MB. Even RAM data width only 448 bits but this is almost two times more than data RAM for HD 4890 256 bits. But GTX 275 is still using RAM type GDDR3 which is only able to transfer two times per clock cycle. Compare to HD 4890 with its RAM GDDR5 which able to transfer four times per clock cycle.

For power supply GTX 275 using 55 nm GT200 GPU have peak power in 219 Watt. Big enough where their rival only need 190 Watt. But this is understandable considering the phisic chip 55 nm GT200 is big & has 1.4 billion transistors that automatically consuming big power too.
